Programme: Arts and Childcare Kerala The schools and after school clubs you will be working in are under-resourced and children have extremely limited access to arts education. However, with your help, orphans and underprivileged children can be introduced to fun and exciting activities that provide them with a means of self-expression and help build their confidence. You will make a significant contribution to the personal and educational development of children from challenging backgrounds on this program your support is highly valued by the schools.

Room & Board (any housing, food, and transportation included). Accommodation is in shared (mixed sex) rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Please bring bed sheets and pillow covers. There is running water available for cooking and showers. Flush toilet facilities are available, and participants share base duties, including cleaning and other chores.
Does the project require any special preparation? Staff in the field will provide training on the skills required, but you may benefit from learning more about local history, culture and customs before you travel. Overview of the tasks and time commitment needed from the participant. Our Arts and Childcare program, is focused around our partnership with three local schools Thamaraparbhu, Wathuruthy and Cottelengo. Two of these schools work in slums with very disadvantaged children. You will be working with children aged between 4 and 17 years old and some adults, your hours will coincide with the school day, but you can expect to volunteer between 6-8 hours a day with school days starting early at 8-9am. You will mainly be working with groups of children in tutorials where you can be creative and organise extra curricular activities, indoor/outdoor games and so on. During the school holidays and when there are public holidays due to festivals, you will work alone or in pairs in a local girls/boys home and do group exercises in English learning, yoga, dance sports or arts!
What specific skills, education, or experience must the participant have? What skills, education, or experience are desirable? Volunteers need not have any specific skills just an enthusiasm and passion for contributing to the project and the local partner objectives. Volunteers are required to be fluent in English.
Health and safety (site specific health and safety information). The nearest emergency medical facilities are located a few kilometers from the placement. Medical services in India are good and hospitals are safe and wellequipped. In addition health and safety briefings are given to all volunteers when they arrive.
Inclusions/things to do (trips or extra features). In your down time you will be free to travel in the local area and can expect weekends off. In this time you could explore Kerala or opt for one of the side trips on offer. Before and after your programme you could visit the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, chill out at Varkala or Kovalam beach or just travel around other parts of India.

Additional Information. Everyone must get a visa before entering India. Please note, visas usually start from the date applied for, rather than the intended date of travel. Always obtain a tourist visa, unless staying for more than 12 weeks.
